Barley field background

I’ve been using this as my background on my laptop for a while. I really love this photo with the subtlety of the shades of green. The slight shade of yellow as the barley starts to ripen gives the whole image a happier or warmer tone and it’s something I haven’t tired of.

is my photography blog. The idea is that I post an image on here at least once a month and try to increase that when time and talent allow.

I shoot with both Nikon and

Olympus Micro Four Thirds. I started using Olympus again to reduce the size of my daily carry bag.

My relatively simple goal

for this blog is to provide some level of accountability to myself. If I have to update this regularly then I have to take photographs, post-process them and upload them.

I have had a bad habit in the past of taking lots of photos, looking at them on my laptop and never sharing with others.

In my daily carry bag I have my

Olympus OM-D E-M5, Olympus 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 and 40-150mm f/4-5.6 along with the flash, spare SD cards and batteries.

I carry this in my Peak Design Sling and sometimes I add my Toshiba Click Mini.

This is my lightened down kit bag. I have three kids now and carrying my D7100, D5300 and a set of primes, an ultra wide and a superzoom doesn't really work as well.

I use the viewfinder with back

button focus for single point autofocus and exposure lock on half button press. Most of the time this gives me a focus that's as good as I'd get using manual with focal confirmation.

I've found that Nikon's central weighted colour is usually about the best for my subjects but I like the D7XXX ability to change that easily on the fly.

For post processing, management

and storage I have a process that has evolved over the years.

I use digiKam to download, organise and tag my images. I store them on my laptop with continual backup of anything I do.

I use darktable to process raw images and post process.

I use hugin for panorama and my small attempts at HDR.

I upload my photos to Flickr and store them there for the world to view.

I tend to put my Nikon kit together

based on what I’ll be doing in a day and where I’ll be going. What I put in my bag can include:

Nikon D7100
Nikon D5300
10-20mm ultra wide
35, 50 or 180mm primes
55-300mm zoom
150-500mm super zoom

Sometimes, depending on the day, it also includes a laptop or a tripod.
